When the cheese moves, you move or starve!

Blog #6 of 31 days and 31 tips to survival in Network Marketing.
TODAY'S TIP: When the cheese moves, you move or starve!

One of the best books I ever read when I joined the industry of network marketing was ‘Who Moved My Cheese”.  From the very first chapter I got it!  At that time the cheese in my financial life had moved, the opportunity I was in started to be less fulfilling. But I was stuck.  I was stuck going to the same place to collect a bigger check that did not exist.  Going to the same place looking for career satisfaction when that was no longer available for me.  The cheese or the opportunity that brought me to that job had simply moved.  Due to my lack of willingness to move with the cheese, I continued to show up everyday as if the cheese/opportunity would just appear.

You know what I kept getting caught up in?  A trap with no cheese!

This is often what gets us caught in a business opportunity that is not providing us fulfillment anymore.  Yes massive momentum, money and recognition may have been there at one time.  Maybe when you first joined there was an abundance of opportunity.  Timing in this business is everything! Joining at the right time can make you a lot of money.  Joining at the wrong time can cost you a lot of money.  But staying past your time will slowly starve you until you spiritually die.

Damn was that last statement to harsh?  Maybe a bit?  But was it true?

How do you identify if the cheese has moved or if you have just lost sight of the cheese?

One way is to ask somebody.  There are times when personal situations cause you to believe that the opportunity is all gone from your current business.  What may really be happening is that you lost sight of the reason you joined.  Maybe the cheese has moved from your sight.  You have developed ‘opportunity blindness’.

Yes it happens to the best of us.  Opportunity blindness can come from a bunch of things.  It can happen because you have lost your drive for the business.  You do also know that communicable diseases of the mind are real in this industry? You can easily catch the blindness disease by being around other people that have gone blind to the success that is right there in front of their eyes.  Beware of these folks, many of them have been around for a while and are burnt out.  But instead of them realizing they are burnt they say the opportunity is burnt.  RUN AWAY!  These people may be making a huge mistake for a personal reason that has nothing to do with you.

Sometimes the cheese has REALLY moved.  You know you have felt it for a while.  You just kept telling yourself it was coming back and waited.  Maybe you even tried to fake like you were eating cheese because everyone else was faking it too.  Either way faking it only lasts so long.  You can tell when the opportunity has moved because people start looking emaciated. They may be singing the same praises of the company but their lifestyle and their pockets starts to look really thin.

So what do you do?

FIND THE CHEESE! AKA THE MONEY, CHEDDA, PAPER, DOUGH, MOULA

This is the part that is simple while at the same time hard.  The simple part is you are only a few steps from finding where the opportunity has gone.
  • It is either in your company and you have gone blind.
  • Or it is in a different part of your company and you refuse to change what you focus on or do to make money.
  • Or it is gone and it is time for you to leave.  The hard part is no one likes change.

What is the language of people who can’t find cheese and starve waiting for it to come back?

You have to learn to listen in order to find out if you are stuck in this group.  Every conversation will be about what happened in the past.  They will talk about how the meetings used to be or how much money they used to make.  They will talk about all the people that used to be on the team.  Everyone in this group knows the cheese has moved.  It is almost like they are having a séance to magically bring the opportunity back.  If you, your business partners or leaders are always talking about the past then they really don’t see the future.  Any accomplishment more than six months old is irrelevant.  If new things are not happening then it may be over.  You don’t get paid to be a damn history major in the mlm game. You get paid to be a person who finds the cheese.  You make even more money when you help others do the same.

Look there is no Ouija board magic in this business.  You have to make moves towards what you want and not wish it would come back to you.

So figure out your next move.
  • Is it another product or service within your current company you should be focused on?
  • Are there other people in your company making money doing something new that you have not adapted too?
  • Is there a new technique that the successful people are using that has success?

Big key point!  There may be something people are doing in the industry, that is working, that you are not doing in your company.  Go find that knowledge and see if it works.  Then bring it back to your team and see if that revives the success.

Now if you have been banging your head against the wall for a while trying to find the cheese and everyone one around you has been doing the same thing, then maybe it is really gone from your current situation.

Then that means it is time for the great migration.  Now fellow networkers don’t get your panties in a bunch at me, please.  Let’s keep it real.  We know it exists.  There are times when a company’s light has dimmed.  We know that when a leader or group recognizes the money has moved they may move on.  It is the nature of all life. History tells us how the world started in Africa a billion years ago but now billions populate the earth all over.  Humans have always moved to be closest to the flow of water.  Water in this case is money.  If the flow has stopped we find another stream.

Some of the top companies now where built at a time when other top companies failed.  That is the circle of life.  Let me give this last tip to everyone in our industry.  Any move you make, make that move out of a spirit of abundance.  When you decide the opportunity has moved for you don’t make that decision for everyone around you.  Sometimes there is just enough cheese for those that don’t need much.  Other times there are people that stored up so much residual cheese that they don’t need to make a move.

If that is not your situation then I suggest you go find who moved your cheese.
Like for real, go get the book and read it!  Then go and find MONEY for real.
If it is in your current company then go to it.
If you have just been blind to it then change your negative thinking and go get it.
If you know it has been long gone then you get long gone and find it elsewhere.

Just don’t stave while you sit in a position of prayer waiting for a source of money to appear.  Yes we pray on our knees but even when prayers are answered God has a way of placing it just out of reach so we have to do something to get the blessing.

Blog #5     Check your emotions at the door!  If your opportunity does not sound good to you then try and adjust your EQ.

This industry of MLM / network marketing is a bigger roller coaster than anything you can experience at six flags.  It starts off same way.  You strap in, laugh a bit about the excitement, and enjoy the climb and the views from a new elevation.

Sometimes it feel like you are rising for a long time and the drop is short.  Other times the rise is fun but the drop takes forever.  Either way you will experience some highs and lows very frequently.

I heard a sermon over 20 years ago that talked about EQ.  I looked at it like the EQ in my car. If there it too much of something distorting the true sound then adjust the EQ.  It is the same things in business.  If you get to high or too low you begin to confuse what I really going on.  It can cause you to make a decision based on distorted emotions.

Everything we experience goes through one of our 5 senses.  Then it goes though the layers of filter and thought patterns we have in our head.  Those patterns are set up based on experience in the world.

What makes the network marketing game a bit tough for a new person are the new challenges that are put through old filters and patterns. The skill we need to have to adapt to a new situation properly is the ability to adjust our EQ.

As you build a business you will have to work with a lot of different types of people.  If you don’t learn to adjust your emotion you are doomed.  There are some people in this world that sound like music your ears when they speak.  That is because they sound like what you love hearing.  They sound like you.  But when you have to work with people that don’t sound like you it can be tough.

I am a super positive but also a keep it simple type of guy.  When I used to have people join my team that were skeptics, I would go crazy.  I did not like having to take time to help them go from skeptical to activity. My filters told me to just leave those people alone.  Oddly enough some of those skeptics help me make a million dollars.  They were not being difficult, they were merely putting the information through their filters.  Once they got enough information they because believers and they helped other skeptics believe too.

What we all have to learn is to STOP TAKING THINGS PERSONALLY.  Understand that every reaction that a person brings to you is not about you.  It is about them and how they feel.  When we learn to adjust how we react and learn to change how we think.

Emotional intelligence will be the key to create success when it comes to working with people.  Think about the last time a person really got under your skin or a word that someone said to you that made you REACT negatively.  EQ will teach you to respond more than you react.  We REACT to something we are allergic to.  We RESPOND to medicine that works on the allergy.  Lets do a better job of responding to actions or words from others that press our buttons.

I will give one word that has to be filtered differently, that is the word NO!

The ‘no’ word is one that can drive you crazy in sales.  The biggest thing you have to realize is that ‘no’ means a lot of different things.  With the proper EQ you have the ability to figure that out without getting discouraged.

Learn to hear the word ‘no’ differently.  No can mean different things.
  • I want to know more before I can say yes
  • I need to think about it and right now is a bad time
  • This sounds great but I just joined something in the past and failed
  • You are making this sound to good so I am afraid to join you
  • Someone I know tried something like this and failed
  • I am successful at my job, I don’t want to fail at something new
  • I am not good at sales
  • I don’t think I would have the time.

Without the proper filters all most networkers hear in NO!!!!

You opportunity lies in answering the real reason behind the objection.  That can only happen when you adjust your filters and change your pattern of response.

As toddlers, when our parents to us no, what did we do? We stayed the course until we got what we wanted or cried ourselves asleep from exhaustion.  As children we learned the word no meant to give up and obey the command.  As adults that form of rejection now causes many pain so they do everything possible to stay away from a no.

Your opportunity is behind many of the people that tell you no.

There are so many books that will help you grow emotionally in life and in this business world.  To not read them can doom you to a life of failure.  Rarely to people challenge themselves to success when they have to climb a mountain of rejection to get there.  Now think about every book you have read about successful people.  How many of them say, “I woke up one day, tried something one time and became a millionaire”?  NONE

The story every successful person has is pretty much the same.  If you have read my book ‘Running With Finishers’, then you know I have dozens of stories about my friends who have success.  All of them tell about disappointments, people that told them know, even family members that discouraged them.

Most of them can refer to one or two books that changed their EQ.  They can tell you how they adjusted how they thought about rejection.  Anyone who has made it to the top will tell you it was not easy it was worth it.

We can never control all the things that happen in life the only true control we have is how we think about what happens.

The same level of emotional thinking that got you to where you are is not the same thinking that will get you to the next level.  The man or woman that stops the continual development of the mind has will also notice a decline in their success.

One last example I can give is my own.  In my first few mlm opportunities I did not take the time to adjust my thinking.  So my results were always the same.  I would join, get all excited, talk to my easy ‘yes’ people (the people that say yes to almost anything but rarely do anything) then once I got to a ‘no’ person I stopped.  Now I did not quit the opportunity.  I would find a reason to avoid getting anymore no’s.  It took several companies before I learned it was not the company that was no good; it was my horrible ability to adjust my thinking and hearing.
Once I learned to stop avoiding no’s and people that made me uncomfortable I got past the ‘yes’ people.  I stated talking people that challenged me.  These people would say not or many of the other objections we hear.  I took that ‘no’ and then responded with a positive statement or question.  I cut through objections and got to what they really needed to hear.  I started to recruit people non-stop.  It was so easy and all because I learned to think differently.

So the challenge is not you business.  The challenge is your business needs a new version of you.  Become the better you by adjusting how you think.  Then you will begin to adjust how you treat people.

Blog #4   ‘Building momentum’
The Surviving MLM aka Network Marketing Series by Mikal Mekki

What is momentum?  It is when the pace of your team moves faster and bigger than your individual efforts.   In my opinion this is where network marketing gets fun!

Every company or team goes through 5 phases.
  1. Formulation – When the product or concept is being developed and launched.
  2. Concentration – When the early adopters are joining and concentrating on the systems that will make the business grow.
  3. Momentum – The fun factory. This is where leaders show up and create a culture.  Often the culture created is one that is grown organically from the field by a leader or group of leaders that join at the same time.
  4. Stability - Now the top earners are doing well and things are smooth sailing.  There are no dramatic success stories like before. But a steady gradual growth.  This is where some folks get bored or forget the system of success.
  5. Destabilization – Something breaks in the system.  People start to panic, some leave for good reasons and others figure out how to get back momentum.  We also call this a winter in your business. But it is only a season for those that study success and practice success principals.

Although a company will go through the first two phases once, they will go through the last 2 or 3 over and over.  It is not every year but it will happen.

Key focus for the purpose of this conversation is how to build momentum.  Nothing stays the same forever.  If you can learn to create momentum then you will be able to handle the situation when things flatten or decline in your business.

When you talk to people who have had massive MOMENTUM they sometimes say all they did was 1-2-3 and everything worked out just fine.  That is because building momentum in our industry can sometimes feel like giving birth.  That is to say it can be hard, it feels like you can’t take it, then all of a sudden new life appears on your team.

Now I am not woman but I have heard the pain of birth is beyond description.  Yet women do it and then talk about it years later in the form of a time-line.  Now stay with me women I don’t want any hate mail. I am saying the pain is not all they talk about.  I have heard women talk about where they were when they went into labor, how long it lasted and how supportive their incredible partner was through the whole thing.  Okay I rarely hear that last part but you women should give a shout out sometimes. Lol

All right back to the point.  So when women look at their children they are not having flashbacks of the pain.  They are remembering it was a challenge and they made it. That is how we feel as leaders who have created momentum.  We will tell you where we were when.  That is what we talk about.  Rarely will we give you the horror story.  We probably blocked that out or now that time has passed leaders realize it really was not that bad.

See when you talk to a leader we will say things like, “I did it and you can too.”
What we are not saying is, “I stayed up late nights worrying if I was doing it right and even cried a few times.  I doubted my self a few times and even got frustrated with the pace of my growth.”

It is not that as leaders we don’t want you to know the truth.  It is just that we have spent too much time focusing on the positive outcome we have, that we forget the gory details of the climb up the mountain.

So how can this help you build momentum?  I want you to get it through your head right now that there are no new problems.  There are no new challenges; time constraints or whatever excuses you will give yourself for not making it.

If other folks have figured out how to build momentum then you can too.

Now I hope you recognize this whole time I have been talking about real momentum.  Anyone can join and make a sell.  Anyone can join and get a business partner or a few business partners.

BUT THAT IS WHERE MOST PEOPLE GET STUCK

They are pregnant with the possibility of success, and not for nine months, but for their entire career.  They never give it that focus and push it requires. They are always GETTING READY TO GET READY.

My opinion on why people won’t build momentum; It is because they don’t want to go through the pain of labor to give birth to an organization.

So once again, what is momentum?  It is when the pace of your team moves faster and bigger than your individual efforts.   In my opinion this is where network marketing gets fun!

  • How do you build it?  You believe in a mission! You get sold out on the vision of how your life and everyone’s life that joins the team will be changed.
    • Now be careful.  The mission has to be about the people and you.  Not just you.  Don’t make the mission your new car.  Make the mission about something everyone can believe in, a social cause or issue.

  • How do you drive it? You start off by being as active as YOU CAN for 90 days.
    • That means if you have a job work in you spare time but put in a full time effort.
    • That means you have a list of people you are going to contact and you work through every name on the list with a fierce time focus.
    • Go all out and try to bring in as many personal recruits to your business as you can.  Don’t worry about trying to be perfect, just try to be busy.
    • If possible run with a finisher aka a leader in your company.  Let them know you vision, allow them to help you craft the pitch of your vision and let them work with the people you bring on.

  • How do you protect it?  Create a simple system. Do not let any complicated system get in the way! Or any complicated person!
    • Make sure your system of success is simple! 3 to 5 steps.
    • Make sure it is so simple that anyone can repeat the steps.
    • Make sure you talk about the steps so much that people think you area broken record.
    • Make sure everyone repeats the mission to his or her team members at every possible chance.  The system should be a focus so strong that even the newest people hear about it on the first day they join.
    • BIGGEST TIP! Create massive recognition around people that have success through the system.

Remember momentum is the only way to make incredible income in this business.  Slow and steady rarely wins the race here.  Slow and steady will usually get a LOW AND STEADY          commission check.  Who wants that?

You want a rock start check, you want people hitting new ranks, getting bonuses and earning company incentives.

When you create an atmosphere of momentum it will run away from you.

Last tip!  BEWARE OF YOUR FRICKIN EGO!!!!!!

When the team starts to grow be sure to allow other leaders to emerge and take over the position of co-leader.  Don’t be afraid if people even move faster than you through your team.  If you create a great system that means it will be easier for others to have success.

What ever you do, don’t eat your young! Don’t become envious of their success to the point where you cannibalize their name or reputation to slow them down.

Of course if you are on a team. HOW DO YOU PROTECT THE MOMENTUM THE LEADER CREATED?  Make sure you keep cheering on the leader.  Be sure to protect the leaders image, and be sure to keep the team positive.

The biggest killer to momentum is negative talk amongst the team.  Often this stuff never gets to you as a leader until it is too late.  The best way to keep momentum alive is to make everyone on the team responsible for keeping the team a happy place.

So that is it, another 1 of the 31 success strategies on surviving this journey to success in network marketing.

Sound fun yet?

Trust me when you are making enough passive income to not have to work a job, you will be happy you followed the path to success in this industry.

Violating the friend zone! Don’t end up left holding the phone with no one to talk to!

#Survivingmlm

Don’t lose everyone who knows you just to find a few business partners.  Take your time and realize that in business you market and sell to people who want your product.  There is never a need to constantly bombard your timeline.  Never a need to make people feel like you have joined a cult and you are “un-friending” anyone who does not follow along.  You will be successful in any business if along the way you learn to attract people and not piss off people.

OMG! I am so glad I did not have social media when I first joined this industry.  I would have lost a lot of my “friends” on line within a month.  Or at least they would have hid me from their timeline.  Why, you may be asking.  Because it would have seemed easy to just sit back and post all day everyday about my new business.
Day one “Man I am so excited I just joined.....”
Day two “I just used the product, it is so great this is what happened......”
Day three or week three “I just got a check of _______ man I love this”
Day four of month one “man people who work a job are missing out”

And it continues...then post testimonial everyday. Then post my check.  Then post how my life is so much better than everyone else’s.  Then post another check.  Then post someone else’s check in my up line that makes more money.

Then my social media friends would have been thinking:
Day one “Oh that’s nice Mikal joined a new business”
Day two “Oh he must be really excited because he posted 2 days in a row”
Day three “Great you got a check Mikal, but I make 10x’s more than that”
Day four “I actually love my job and Mikal is starting to be an ass about this”

Does this sound like anyone you know?  If so please do not tag them lol

Yep this would have been me.  But there was not such thing as Facebook, Instagram or any social media when I joined network marketing.  So how did I make it?  I learned to have conversations with people.  A conversation is transactional.  A pitch is usually one directional.  That means that I learned to connect with people on a common interest first.  Then see if they were open to hear about what I did for a living or about my new business.  Then give them some info based on how they wanted it.  Some people wanted to look at a video, some wanted to meet for coffee, some wanted to attend a meeting.  Now you have things like zoom or Skype.  Point being, I let my friends decide if they wanted to business with me.  I never made it seem like either you do business with me, or that is the end of our friendship.

Most people do not know how to use social media to attract those that are looking.  Most people use social media to blow a trumpet in everyone’s ear!
That is not the best way to do business.  The thing people love about social media is the illusion of choice.  Now I will not spend time on why I say illusion but trust me social media is more concerned about social engineering.  But since this is about surviving and having success in mlm, I will stick to that topic.

You may have already made the mistake.  Or you have already learned from it.  People follow you on social media because of you.  It is your brand.  Let’s think about branding for a moment.  When Coca-Cola comes out with a new flavor do they blast all the ingredients on their social media page? Hell no!  They show you the image of someone enjoying their product.

When you are launching with a company it is not the worst thing to mention it.  Just do not make you new company your everyday post.  Don’t go hard and call anyone with a 9-5 a sheep, and act like you are Moses leading them to a promise land of home based business wealth.  No one wants to feel like they are a dummy for not doing what you do or using your product.

When joining a new company or when your company makes a major announcement, I am sure you get all excited and want the world to know.  But how did your company make the announcement.  Did they just post it on Facebook?  Or did they build up the anticipation of the announcement? Did they post some teasers about it, and then you got on a call or went to an event and heard all of the details.  That is how you should treat anyone in your social media audience.  Give them the respect your company gave you.  Gradually allow people to be open to what you do.

One this is for sure, when you let people see something for themselves they usually make a better decision.  Not only that, they make better decisions based on solid information.

Have the spirit of a prospector.  Back in the gold rush days prospectors did a lot of preparation before they went to get the gold.  They traveled to where the gold was.  Then they got the proper tools to find the gold.  Then they learned what gold actual looked like and how to tell the real gold from what was fake gold.  Also known as fool’s gold.

That is what we do in network marketing if we want success.  Think like a prospector.
  • Where is the gold located? Maybe the best place to look for people are in social groups on social media and not just your timeline!

  • Put your pan in the streams? The prospector did not pan for gold by watching.  The found the flowing stream and began to dip the pan over and over until they found gold.  You should be posting and connecting with people in social streams.   Find where people who are looking for what you have like to hang out online.

  • Take your gold to be verified and purified! Once you find a person who has interest don’t just overwhelm them.  Take the time to filter them through the information to see if they are real. Do they really want an opportunity?  Then allow them to go through your companies learning system and grow with time.

My goal is to help you survive the network marketing system.  Not drown in the stream of success.  You should be flowing with the stream and not becoming a victim of it.  Maybe that is why we call it a stream of income.  Water is cruel and a blessing depending on the person using it and the circumstance.  Let’s work together to make sure you are using this stream of network marketing.  Learn to properly use it and allow the network-marketing stream to carry you to a new destination of wealth.

In this business we need Spousal Support now or pay Spousal Support Later.

Blog Two: Spousal support now or pay spousal support latter.

Surviving MLM, or the PC word, Network Marketing

Find a way to support each other. One of you just joined a company that may have you thinking differently.  Don’t lose someone because you change overnight and expect them to change or accept the new you right away.

I am not saying just because you join a company you will do or die in the marriage area.  But I am saying that sometimes a new venture will test the strength of a relationship.  Create a safety net off the top.  In my 20 years of coaching people in the industry I have seen relationships fail and many succeed to a greater level.  The ones that succeed, and grow even stronger, embrace the idea of mutual support and room for both people to grow at different paces.  The people that fail say things like “my spouse was holding me back.”  But did they hold you back or did you leave them back?  When you jump off the mountain and grow wings on the way down it is usually because you went to some event, heard some call, or saw the light in your opportunity. But did your spouse see the same thing?  Did you take them with you to hear what you heard? Did you allow them to meet the people that inspired you to join?  Did you make a plan to get support, in your new venture, from the  partner your life?

Off the top you need to sit down and make a plan for support.
  • Let your spouse/partner know that you are going to start reading and thinking bigger.
  • Allow your spouse to tell you when you are talking way too much about this new venture; they may be saying they just need some “you time”.
  • Enroll your spouse in the vision of success by telling them your WHY, in terms of what goals you have that will benefit your spouse and/or family.
  • Find something your spouse is interested in or is doing. Make sure you support them as much as you want them to support you.
  • Create a schedule so that your new venture does not steal every moment from the people you love.  Don’t go so overboard that you ruin a relationship.
  • Plan a reward at the end of a goal. Something like when I create this much additional income we will go do__________? Or we will travel to_______?

When I was first joined the industry of network marketing I was very young. Immediately the leaders of the company were talking about books I had never read and motivational speakers I had never heard of.  So I dove in, just as you probably did when you joined.

Challenge #1 I sounded like a crazy person to my spouse.  I went from talking about the daily mundane things in life.  To all of a sudden I dropping positive quotes and phrases.  It was like being a sinner on Saturday and waking up talking like a preacher in the pulpit on Sunday.  Wait that sounds like some people I know lol Clearly I had changed overnight and expected everyone to change around me.  Either way you could be moving too fast.  Your personal development journey could be a journey pulling you away from your spouse or the ones closet to you.

Now there is always the person that says to the spouse, “catch up!”  But is that really fair? Rarely do two people grow together at the same time in the same direction.  People often grow when the pain of staying the same is greater than the fear of change.  Your partner may have already gone through a season of change and you may have been in your comfort zone.  They allowed you time. So allow them time.

Take a deep breath.  Enjoy your journey and make sure you find ways to let the ones that love you, enjoy it with you.  I remember going for a trip and telling my spouse that if she let me really focus, we would take that dream trip together.  So what did she do?  She started to let me run, asked me how it was going, and took an interest in my progress.  On the trip she got to meet my new business partners.  She was able to see they were not mlm crazies, but real people.  No she did not decide to join the business right away.  But she did have more a respect for the company I was in.  The support grew.  That’s is how you grow. Grow together!

Surviving MLM
Or the PC word for of the decade, Network Marketing

Before you make a choice or before you make your next move...THINK!

Let’s jump right in and not mess around.  The MLM world is very tricky.  It is kinda like dating to find a spouse blindfolded.  Or if I can use an analogy that would resonate with my wife, choosing an MLM is like wine tasting.

If you have ever gone wine tasting then you know what I mean.  Typically most folks are just acting like they know what they are tasting then they finally pick at least one bottle, to buy and take home, out of guilt.  Then months later they open the bottle and think, “meh...this is just okay.”  Reality is that some wines are just as good as others, it is just your mood or perception that made the difference.

The dating analogy will make sense to most because we have all dated, so I hope.  Like dating you will usually be jumping into a network marketing company based on all the warm feelings you get from the pitch of the month.  That’s right every company has a well-crafted talk to get you to believe.  But of course they should.  Every product in the world has a pitch to get you to buy.  That is called smart business.  There is a leader somewhere creating the most dazzling one-liners and a power point show that will cause you to dream about success while you watch the presentation.

The challenge is it all sounds good but you are sometimes not really seeing anything. Instead of seeing you are probably projecting.  That’s the blindfolded part.  Even when you see information on the company you may only be seeing with your imagination and not your eyes. Projecting an image of your success on a canvas with no real knowledge or experience on how it will happen.

When you are dreaming you see things but in your mind and not in your eyes.  So lets get back to my dating analogy.  Imagine dreaming about your date because you may have heard their voice and a description of them.  You may have even had some details about your date that truly got your juices flowing.  The anticipation of the “getting to know you” experience has you looking forward to the date.  So much so that when you finally see the person you still may be seeing your vision of the person and not the actual person. Often times it will take a few dates or unfortunately a marriage for you to realize this person is someone you projected.  Don’t get mad when the projection wears off and you finally see the real person.

Is that too deep for you?  Too bad.  I gotta do something to express how it feels to choose the wrong company and get stuck.

Don’t hate me the messenger! I come in peace.  I share this with you to help you find a good opportunity or stay away from the industry all together. If you choose to embark on this journey then let me give you a few tips to survive.

First things first, you must be prepared to date around with your eyes wide open.

Often times there is no way to really know if a company is a good fit without trying it first.  People have found that they needed to move on after a week in a company.  Then there are those like me who it took about a year to walk away from an MLM.

See my PROBLEM was I joined a company when I was 18.  I was all hyped up about this diet pack of stuff.  It was a box filled with 5 items that people took weekly to loose weight.  OMG I cannot believe I am just remembering this story after all these years.  So anyways I went to this meeting.  Truly intrigued by the way they told the story about the product and income potential, I left that meeting feeling wealthy already.  I pulled out the last few hundred dollars I had and brought the box.  Then I went home and thought, “okay who do I sell this to?”

Well it did not matter who I sold it to because the next week when I went to the meeting there was no one there.  The whole office was empty.  The company went out of business in a matter of months.

So I guess the company broke up with me.  But not to despair I dated a few more companies before I married one for over 18 years.  Yes it took a few bad attempts but finally I found a way to earn millions in my career in MLM.

So the best things I can share with you to start your journey are the 5 factors in choosing a company.  There is a lot more to survival but let me just get you started.

The 5 Factors:
#1. Culture – This is the most important.  If you do not like the culture and vibe of a company you have to walk away.  Culture will keep you connected more than MONEY!    There will be ups and downs in your business.  But people will stay if the culture is at least decent.

#2. Compensation – How much can you make for doing the simple things.  Here is what really matters; can the average person make $100 - $500 the first month with no experience?  If so then that is a great comp plan because most people join for extra money.  It is not until you help more people make extra money that you start to make extraordinary money.

#3. Leadership – Who is leading the company and what leaders do you have access to?  This is so vital because you need a leader.  Or if you have read any of my books then you know you need a FINISHER.  Someone who has had success that will run with you to the finish line of your goals.  The 1st 90 days in a company are crucial.

#4. Product – If you don’t believe in the product or use it then you cannot sell it.  Plain and simple you have to find a product you can talk about with excitement. You need your own testimony.  People will buy based on results more than hype.  If it is a product that you take then you should be able to show results online.  People should be able to see your healthy skin, slimmer waist, or read your testimony on social media.  If it is a service then you should be able to share what the service did for you.

#5. Company – If you want maximum growth find a company in formulation or momentum.  If you just want a safe a stable business then join a company at the height of momentum or in the stabilization phase.  Formulation means it is just getting started. I will share more about that in a later post.  Momentum means it is the hot company in the game. When a company is in  MOMENTUM usually you will see a lot of people joining and the company name being talked about everywhere.  Now there is new momentum and sustained momentum. No time to break that down now, but follow me on something like YOUTUBE or my website. I promise I will get into that later.  The Stabilization phase is where it gets a bit tricky.  By this time many of the leaders that built the momentum are gone and you are left with the top moneymakers leading the charge.  The old leaders mean well but they are looking for new leaders, like you, to come in and bring back momentum.  This can be a huge opportunity for you or a snooze fest. It truly depends on your effort.  Buyer beware.

So there you have it, some things to look out for on the beginning of your MLM aka Network Marketing journey.

Maybe you are already on the journey, tired of dating companies or just had a breakup with a company.

Surviving Network Marketing!

You can make it and still keep your sanity.
Are you in "the industry"?  I mean the network marketing industry.  If you are, then you already know why this topic is so important.  Most people go in and out of companies, or even out of the networking industry, quickly.  "You can't handle the truth"

Okay I'm joking.  Of course you can handle the truth.  The truth is this industry will make you question your sanity.  I have seen the strongest people get started and walk away feeling deflated.  BUT WHY?  What happens in the process that causes self doubt?

It is the learning curve.  This curve can be so sharp that you may end up running off the road to success.  Is this is 100% avoidable?  YES IT IS! In the next few weeks I will be writing a lot about surviving the industry.

This week let me start you off with the greatest tip ever.  My mentor Harland Stonecipher used to have a great saying. By the way when I say mentor I mean my real mentor. A, "we have had lunch together and talked often" mentor.  Not the, "I read the guys book and now I am claiming him as my mentor".  Sorry I had to vent but people falsely claim connection all the time.
WHEW!!! I am done venting...

Okay so here is the tip my REAL mentor gave to me.  "The biggest sale you will ever make is when you sell yourself".  That is what I call sage wisdom.  If you don't believe in your product or opportunity then you will probably only last a nano second. People join and the first time someone says "BOO", they run for the hills.  You have to BELIEVE. Use your product, study your company history and know that it is something you are proud to represent.

Once you get focused on why you love your company it will be harder to pay much attention to what negativity someone my say about your company.  People will always have opinions.  Usually people have an opinion based on conjecture and minimal facts.  There are those that hate to try new things or only believe what they see on TV.

If you are going to survive this industry you are going to have to learn the science of staying focused on what you believe.  Staying focused on your mission and values will allow you to traverse the mounds of negative energy you may encounter on your journey to success.

One last thing. If you are excited and focused you will attract others that want to run with you.  When you find these people that join you be sure to help them get sold out on the company and products as well.  Together you will cross the finish line and have the moniker of a FINISHER!
Successfully Yours,

Don't create a stream of success & drown in it!

As you are creating your stream of income don’t get drowned by your own success.

Trying to go from where you are to where you want to be can be a daunting task.
Often the journey is filled with the highs of progressions and the lows of setbacks.
Anyone can give us the advice of “keep going”, but is that the only advice we need?

What about advice on how to recharge & keep yourself floating above the waves of stress?
In order to float you need buoyancy.

You need as much support from those who support you as you have weight upon you.  That is how you achieve buoyancy!  The more weight you have on you the more support you need.  Your support team can be your family, friends, even business partners.  Business partners are okay as long as they know how to leave work at work.  If you can’t enjoy a good time out without turning it into a business meeting then you might want to leave those folks back at the office.

YOUR FRIENDS ARE NOT THERE JUST TO SUPPORT YOUR BUSINESS!
THEY ARE THERE TO SUPPORT YOUR DREAMS AND CHEER YOU ON.
Don’t cut people off just because they don’t do what you do.

Who is there to keep you lifted?

Picture
Don’t lose who you are in pursuit of what you want.   I am asking us all to find ways to spend time with those that support us.  To unplug from the weight of success or what we want.  Plug into the source of the power that will carry you to your shores of success.   You may not have a lot of time but just make it some quality time.

We all need to take time away from our goals like rest stops on a journey.  Rest stops WERE INVENTED TO REST, get out of the vehicle (job) and take pictures.   Even on a cruise the ship stops into different ports so we can enjoy what every destination has to offer.  What are your rest stops in life and do you schedule them?

Just like we schedule success we have to schedule enjoyment.  There was a time I did not understand this principal.  I would work even when not at work.  I thought working “aint to faint” is what it took to have success.  This type of focus wears on you and when you don’t recharge you become less effective.  Plus it wears on the people around you.  I have seen people lose marriages, friendships and fall into bad health.  All because they spent too much time only focused on the goal.

Which day or night is set aside strictly for your enjoyment?  I remember when my family set aside every Sunday for family dinner night.  All of us got together at my mothers home and brought our families.  Those times have long past since many of us have moved and our kids are in college.  I am so thankful that it lasted as long as it did.  Those times will forever be the glue that keeps us connected no matter how far apart we are.  Those times also kept us grounded and recharged.  It was at a time when my siblings and I were all creating successful careers.  The stresses of the week were challenging and coming together once a week put our why back into perspective.

The reality is you are not your job, your money, your success or your possessions.
There are only two things a human being leaves behind that will benefit the future: his deeds and his words!  The people that will remember our deeds, and our words the best, are the people around us.  Let’s make sure we don’t forget them.  Let’s make sure we spend time with them.  Let them be the blessing to us they were meant to be.  What good would is it to get to the finish line only to find you don’t recognize anyone there? Our support system will be the ones waving the checkered flag as we cross the finish line to our success.

Is it all about you, or the future? Are you Selfish or Supportive?

Is your success all about you?  Is it about creating a better future for yourself and others?
Is the world a better place with 100 billionaires or would it be better with 1,000,000,000 millionaires?
*Currently it is projected there will be 53 Millionaire by 2019

Can you find a way to mentor a few people while you are actively moving on the path to success.

The world needs more FINISHERS!                          www.runningwithfinishers.com

Too many people work to build something and all they leave behind is a great story.  Why?
Because they had a dream and built something but forgot to be a FINISHER for someone else.  I truly don't think people intend to be selfish.  I believe that people get so caught up in creating personal success they forget to create success for a successor at the same time.  It is the difference between doing addition and multiplication.

We need to think multiplication.  While you are building one you can be creating two.  How?  Finding someone to help you along your success journey.  One or two people to help you but at the same time they are learning from you.  They are watching how you create success and learning from your mistakes as well.  Keep these folks by your side and as the dream becomes bigger you now have people to help you grow. This could be the start of legacy success.

When you leave behind a legacy it creates success that continues to grow long after you are no longer involved.
This is what we all want.  At least I hope it is.  To build something, create something, start a vision that extends well beyond our years on earth.  It takes a person to not only run on the path to success but to have the presence of mind to take a few people along for the journey.

Just think for a moment on who came along in your life and inspired you to do more.  Was there someone in your profession that was having success that you gravitated towards?  Was there a person at the job you followed closely to pattern yourself after?

We all need to be about building the future while we exist in the present.  All it takes is to have an abundance mentality.  The scarcity mentally thinks that there are not enough resources to go around therefore all ventures need to have as few people as possible involved.  These types of people fear competition. They fear sharing ideas and letting people bring new ideas.  They fear a person will learn what they do and go out to take over.

No!  Rarely is that the case.  Typically you find that the student learns from the teacher and later they both benefit from doing business together.  This is how we duplicate success rather than just add to success.  Just think at one point there were only 4 major television broadcasting stations.  They tried to hold on as long as possible for fear someone else would steal the views and they would lose money.  Look at TV now.  100's of networks and even more sources of viewing being created everyday.  Sharing the wealth benefits the viewer because now we have more choices.  There is so much abundance to go around.

How many successful business came from working for Bill Gates and Microsoft?
How many successful car companies and leaders emerged by following Henry Ford?
How many successful entertainers learned the business and gained fame by watching Quincy Jones?

Stop what you are doing!!!!!

Would you benefit from some additional help?  Are there some sharp young people around you that you can mentor and help them learn what you do?  Could you not only train your replacement but start someone else on a path to wealth?

Last note: When you create a greater economy for one person you may be creating generational wealth for 100's of people for years to come.

Thanks for reading!

Make them call you by your name!     Who are you?

On January 17th, 1942 Muhammad Ali was born to the world as Cassius Marcellus Clay.  He would change his name to Muhammad as he found a path in Islam that appealed to who he wanted to be.  He loved the discipline the culture and the reverence for nature & God.  All he asked is for people to acknowledge his choice and give him respect.  You better believe he got tired of asking.  He decided to be so good at his craft that the world had no choice by to call him by his name.  When you decide who you are you have to SHOW the world not TELL the world.

If you have ever seen the movie 'Ali' you may remember the scene with Will Smith, who plays Ali, in a title bout.  As he was punishing his opponent he kept saying, "what's my name, what's my name."  Ali was determined to keep punching and basically embarrassing the other fighter until he had to call him "Ali" just to stop the whopping.

But WHY?  Why would he ask a fighter who came to fight him what his name was?

Because people called him by his former name of Cassius as a sign of disrespect.  No, not all did it with complete ill intent.  Some did it out of ignorance.  They did not understand why he went to the Muslim faith or why he changed his name or had his views on the war.

The key is he did NOT yell at the world.  Instead he stayed true to his path, focused on his craft and had MASSIVE success so the world would CALL HIM BY HIS NAME.

Have you made a decision to "change your name"?  Not really your name but what people know you as.  Maybe people have known you as someone who has not had success.  Maybe people know you as someone who never finishers anything. (you REALLY need to read Running With Finishers)

Some people may think you are not smart enough, attractive enough, fit enough, brave enough, or whatever.  The fact is they may see you differently than you see yourself.

Most people don't want to be known for who they were in high school.  But many go through life never really becoming more than what they were in their 20's.  We would not let our children sit in the 3rd grade for 3 years.  We want them to be better, to grow, to become a man or woman so we don't call them kid anymore.

At your job when you work hard you may go from being called part time, to full time employee, to supervisor and on to manager!  Because of your works your "name" changed in that environment.  You would not walk in as the janitor and ask to be called CEO.  The only way to have people call you CEO is to become CEO.  My point is what do you want us to call you?

WINNER?
OWNER?
CEO?
AUTHOR?
FINISHER?
SUCCESSFUL?
ENTREPRENEUR?

What do you want to be known for?
THEN MAKE THEM CALL YOU BY THAT!
Do it though work!  Do it through focus and accomplishment.

Make the world know you, not because you ask, but because they have no choice but to applaud what you accomplished.

You can do it! Regardless of your past you can create a future.  We don't go to the movies to watch a guy that went from average to just above average.  That does not sell tickets or ignite our spirits.  We want to hear stories of people that excelled and made something incredible happen.  It does not have to be starting the next internet sensation.  Just go be great at what you want to do.  Let them know you for who you are now!

MAKE THEM CALL YOU BY YOUR NAME!
