Surviving MLM
Or the PC word for of the decade, Network Marketing
Before you make a choice or before you make your next move...THINK!
Let’s jump right in and not mess around. The MLM world is very tricky. It is kinda like dating to find a spouse blindfolded. Or if I can use an analogy that would resonate with my wife, choosing an MLM is like wine tasting.
If you have ever gone wine tasting then you know what I mean. Typically most folks are just acting like they know what they are tasting then they finally pick at least one bottle, to buy and take home, out of guilt. Then months later they open the bottle and think, “meh...this is just okay.” Reality is that some wines are just as good as others, it is just your mood or perception that made the difference.
The dating analogy will make sense to most because we have all dated, so I hope. Like dating you will usually be jumping into a network marketing company based on all the warm feelings you get from the pitch of the month. That’s right every company has a well-crafted talk to get you to believe. But of course they should. Every product in the world has a pitch to get you to buy. That is called smart business. There is a leader somewhere creating the most dazzling one-liners and a power point show that will cause you to dream about success while you watch the presentation.
The challenge is it all sounds good but you are sometimes not really seeing anything. Instead of seeing you are probably projecting. That’s the blindfolded part. Even when you see information on the company you may only be seeing with your imagination and not your eyes. Projecting an image of your success on a canvas with no real knowledge or experience on how it will happen.
When you are dreaming you see things but in your mind and not in your eyes. So lets get back to my dating analogy. Imagine dreaming about your date because you may have heard their voice and a description of them. You may have even had some details about your date that truly got your juices flowing. The anticipation of the “getting to know you” experience has you looking forward to the date. So much so that when you finally see the person you still may be seeing your vision of the person and not the actual person. Often times it will take a few dates or unfortunately a marriage for you to realize this person is someone you projected. Don’t get mad when the projection wears off and you finally see the real person.
Is that too deep for you? Too bad. I gotta do something to express how it feels to choose the wrong company and get stuck.
Don’t hate me the messenger! I come in peace. I share this with you to help you find a good opportunity or stay away from the industry all together. If you choose to embark on this journey then let me give you a few tips to survive.
First things first, you must be prepared to date around with your eyes wide open.
Often times there is no way to really know if a company is a good fit without trying it first. People have found that they needed to move on after a week in a company. Then there are those like me who it took about a year to walk away from an MLM.
See my PROBLEM was I joined a company when I was 18. I was all hyped up about this diet pack of stuff. It was a box filled with 5 items that people took weekly to loose weight. OMG I cannot believe I am just remembering this story after all these years. So anyways I went to this meeting. Truly intrigued by the way they told the story about the product and income potential, I left that meeting feeling wealthy already. I pulled out the last few hundred dollars I had and brought the box. Then I went home and thought, “okay who do I sell this to?”
Well it did not matter who I sold it to because the next week when I went to the meeting there was no one there. The whole office was empty. The company went out of business in a matter of months.
So I guess the company broke up with me. But not to despair I dated a few more companies before I married one for over 18 years. Yes it took a few bad attempts but finally I found a way to earn millions in my career in MLM.
So the best things I can share with you to start your journey are the 5 factors in choosing a company. There is a lot more to survival but let me just get you started.
The 5 Factors:
#1. Culture – This is the most important. If you do not like the culture and vibe of a company you have to walk away. Culture will keep you connected more than MONEY! There will be ups and downs in your business. But people will stay if the culture is at least decent.
#2. Compensation – How much can you make for doing the simple things. Here is what really matters; can the average person make $100 - $500 the first month with no experience? If so then that is a great comp plan because most people join for extra money. It is not until you help more people make extra money that you start to make extraordinary money.
#3. Leadership – Who is leading the company and what leaders do you have access to? This is so vital because you need a leader. Or if you have read any of my books then you know you need a FINISHER. Someone who has had success that will run with you to the finish line of your goals. The 1st 90 days in a company are crucial.
#4. Product – If you don’t believe in the product or use it then you cannot sell it. Plain and simple you have to find a product you can talk about with excitement. You need your own testimony. People will buy based on results more than hype. If it is a product that you take then you should be able to show results online. People should be able to see your healthy skin, slimmer waist, or read your testimony on social media. If it is a service then you should be able to share what the service did for you.
#5. Company – If you want maximum growth find a company in formulation or momentum. If you just want a safe a stable business then join a company at the height of momentum or in the stabilization phase. Formulation means it is just getting started. I will share more about that in a later post. Momentum means it is the hot company in the game. When a company is in MOMENTUM usually you will see a lot of people joining and the company name being talked about everywhere. Now there is new momentum and sustained momentum. No time to break that down now, but follow me on something like YOUTUBE or my website. I promise I will get into that later. The Stabilization phase is where it gets a bit tricky. By this time many of the leaders that built the momentum are gone and you are left with the top moneymakers leading the charge. The old leaders mean well but they are looking for new leaders, like you, to come in and bring back momentum. This can be a huge opportunity for you or a snooze fest. It truly depends on your effort. Buyer beware.
So there you have it, some things to look out for on the beginning of your MLM aka Network Marketing journey.
Maybe you are already on the journey, tired of dating companies or just had a breakup with a company.
To survive it starts here but it gets deeper. I will be sharing more about dealing with so many aspects of the Network Marketing business. Be on the look out for more blogs, videos and books.
